Research Lab
Through outstanding
scientific studies and their publications, particularly the "Journal of Interior Design" demonstrates a wealth of research from Alzheimer's disease to indoor air quality to the effects of full
spectrum lighting in the workspace. J S D A Inc. has a philosophy of collaboration with educators and researchers exploring those answers.
Research in design, however, is not always
necessarily about finding the answers. The object of research is to ask better questions. The point is to look for patterns of use which will lead to good questions. The research areas
associated with the J S D A Research Lab provide efforts and the collection of databases and references toward ongoing investigations in design education, directions, product manufacture and
design.
The design laboratory focuses its research on the WORKPLACE IMPACT Lab , lead by principal and Associate Professor Janice Stevenor Dale, FIIDA, CID, studying the impact of interior
design on corporate business, specifically developing resources which document increases in productivity, profitability and cost savings to clients.
Additional areas of research interest include:
Environmental Materials:
examines issues of environmentally correct fabrication and specification, and life-cycle analysis. This developing laboratory is initiated on a project by project basis utilizing national scientific testing facilities.
Historical Research: in collaboration with historical and mid-century modern preservation professionals, we
explore research and hands-on experience with historical architecture and design. Restoration of city landmark buildings gives opportunity to J S D A staff, not normally accessible. J S D A Inc. was featured
recently at a Mid-Century Modernism Symposium in the Northwestern United States.
Rapid Delivery Lab:
inspired by the demands of construction, we are continually developing new prototyping methods and delivery advances through
digital technologies. New areas of opportunity include 3D drawings techniques, BIM and estimating, and leading-edge issuance of 3D imaging and BIM-databased construction documents. ArchiCAD continues
to shine as a key partner in design communication futuring.
Performance Code:
Strategies for use through creative design ideas based on existing code knowledge and experience, i.e. the use of water-filled columns as a fire prevention solution in a commercial space. J S D A Inc. recently attended the International Performance Code hearings and was the only interior designer in attendance from the United States of America.
